Flax Oil – Quick Tips

  • NEVER heat flax oil. DO NOT cook with it. Reason: Heating flax oil destroys it’s beneficial nutrients.
  • Liquid vs. Capsules: Liquid is better than capsules. Reason: It’s easier and you get more for your money.  You would have to take about 14 capsules (1000mg) at a time to get the same amount of mg as are in 1 tbsp (14g) of oil.
  • When you buy flax oil:  Make sure it is kept in the refrigerated section of the store.  Don’t buy it off the shelf at room temperature. Some store managers are not aware that flax oil needs to be kept refrigerated (even before opening) regardless of what it says on the label.  Make sure you keep it refrigerated at home as well.
  • Whole Seeds vs. Ground:  Keep in mind that your body cannot assimilate whole flax seeds. It’s okay to eat them whole as they are a good source of fiber, but if you want to get the beneficial omega 3 fatty acids then the seeds must be ground up. A coffee grinder or magic bullet will work well for grinding. The grinders we recommend are listed in our Kitchen Gadgets category. Important Note: After grinding the flaxseeds they should be eaten within about 15 minutes or they can go rancid, at which point they will potentially do more harm than good.
  • Mixing Flax Oil with Cottage Cheese (or other sulferic based protein such as yogurt): This is a very  smart way to take flax oil. Reason: It makes the flax oil more bio-available so that your body can easily assimilate it.  Use this mixture as a base for breakfast shakes, power shakes, or add some honey & spread it on toast for breakfast. See the Recipes category for more info.
  • To get more flax into your diet: Substitute for things like mayonnaise, sauces, and salad dressing. It’s easy to do. See the Recipes category for more info.
